[bioontology-support] [BioPortal] Feedback from Wessel Sloof

Good question.
The BioPortal and UMLS APIs are mutually exclusive. You would somehow need to adjust your validation to include the UMLS as an available service.

Once you have your free license from the UMLS, you can then access DSM-V (along with any other sources) via the UMLS API.
API calls require a key. After logging into UTS, this can be found on the user profile page.

Hello Robert,

Thanks for your quick response and solution. We need to deploy this in our REDCap EDC system for investigators. Currently we have a bioportal ontology service connection as a field validation option for looking up and autocompleting medical terms.
Will the UMLS be available automatically after acquiring the free license in the bioportal ontology service or can it be made available? Or should we set this up locally?
Do you have any knowledge about this?

Best regards,

DSM-5 is a source within the UMLS Metathesaurus [1].

It is categorized as a Level 3 source described as,

‘LICENSEE's right to use material from the source vocabulary is restricted to internal use at the LICENSEE's site(s) for research, product development, and statistical analysis only. Internal use includes use by employees, faculty, and students of a single institution at multiple sites.’

First step is to acquire a free UMLS license [2]. The Metathesaurus download will then be available to you.
The source itself may then be extracted via MetamorphoSys. This will give you the standalone source to work with.

UTS has its own browser. Once you are logged in, click ‘Browse’ and then ‘UMLS Metathesaurus’.
DSM-5 will be searchable as a source.

In addition to this, UMLS offers a REST API [3].

NLM welcomes any further questions you have [4].

Hope this helps.

Dear Madam, Sir,

Kindly I would like to inquire if and when the DSM-5 (V) thesaurus will be available in the Bioportal Repository.
I suppose for now we could use the MFOMD list, but it is based on the older DSM-IV and ICD.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Mr. Wessel Sloof
