[farmshare-discuss] Farmshare collaboration

Hi Tomer, Thank you for your interest in farmshare. See answers below:

Q: Is there a way for us to install the additional software packages such
that we can use the software from the corn and barley clusters?

A: Would these be regular ubuntu packages or source packages which are built? If regular ubuntu, just send an email to research-computing-support at stanford.edu and we will install it. For source packages, these can be built in /mnt/glusterfs which is shared among the farmshare systems. This can be either your glusterfs area or the central area depending on how wide the audience is for the particular package. (note: the central area is what you see when you do "module avail").

Q: If we have shared datasets that we need to process, is there a better
way to share them using a Unix group on a user's Glusterfs space?

A: This is not something we are currently doing but I don't see any reason off hand that it wouldn't work. It would need to be tested.

Q: If we have a file server hosted at the Medical School's IRT rack
space, is there a way for us to "mount" the remote filesystem so that we
can have processes on corn and barley analyze the data on our file server?

A: I'm sorry, the storage pools (except for AFS) on farmshare need to be housed locally. There may be an option to use glusterfs for this. If you could send an email to research-computing-support at stanford.edu with approximate dataset size we can look into it.

thank you
jason

Subject: [farmshare-discuss] Farmshare collaboration

To whom it may concern,

I work in a research lab that is interested in making better use of
FarmShare for research. While FarmShare has some software that we use
(such as R and Blast), we have some other software packages that we use
often for analyzing our data. My questions are:

* Is there a way for us to install the additional software packages such
that we can use the software from the corn and barley clusters?
* If we have shared datasets that we need to process, is there a better
way to share them using a Unix group on a user's Glusterfs space?
* If we have a file server hosted at the Medical School's IRT rack
space, is there a way for us to "mount" the remote filesystem so that we
can have processes on corn and barley analyze the data on our file server?

Any advice on these topics would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

~Tomer
