[farmshare-discuss] any corn upgrades coming before Fall quarter 2016?

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the email, and great question!

While we are definitely making progress on the Ubuntu 16.04 environment, we cannot commit to having it ‘production’ ready before the start of the quarter as there is still lots of work to be done. We are hoping to have something available by the start of the quarter, but possibly in a non-production environment until everything can be tested. We hope to have something for folks who are interested available for login and testing by the end of the month.

We will likely reach out individually to a few current Farmshare users for trying out the new environment, and we can certainly include you in that first round. Once things have been vetted and stabilized we will be opening up the new environment for general use and setting a date for retiring the old Farmhare equipment.

Please let me know if I can clarify, or answer any additional questions.

Hello, I just wanted to check in on the status of the move to Ubuntu 16.04. Will this happen before the start of the quarter?

An update to Ubuntu 16.04 is planned, and should be complete before the beginning of the new academic year.

A brand new FarmShare environment is also planned for sometime after this update, including new hardware, some new storage, and a move to local home directories (AFS directories will remain accessible). No hard date for this change yet, but we’ll announce details here when we have more information. The new environment will run for some time in parallel with the old until it is stable, and to allow users an orderly transition, but the hope is to eventually migrate hardware from the old environment to the new over time.

The python-pandas package appears to be installed but is, of course, the version provided by Ubuntu 14.04. We can update the package once we’ve moved to 16.04, but I think using ‘pip install --user’ is unfortunately the best solution if you need a recent version right now. If you’re still having trouble with the installation, please let us know!

Hello! I am the instructor for CME 211. Our students use Farmshare for various assignments. I am emailing to ask if there are any planned upgrades to the software on the corn system that will happen before the quarter.

For example, would you be upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04?

Also, would it be possible to install the Pandas ( module? (I am attemping a pip3 install --user pandas right now. However, it is taking quite a while to build.)
