I would be very reluctant to introduce some of these neologisms - potogene,
xaptogene ... - into the SO.
If anyone really wants to know
potogene: A potentially new gene.
.. goodness knows how you evaluate that objectivelly.
xaptogene: A gene that has undergone exaptation (Gould & Vrba 1992 Paleobiology
8:4-15), ie has acquired a novel function (the crytallins would be an example).
I think the first to use potogene was Balakirev et al 2003 Genetics 164:533-44.
