"Annotations Standards and Controlled Vocabularies" on 19th - 21st February
2003
Hinxton Hall Conference Centre, Genome Campus, Hinxton, Cambridge CB10 1SD,
United Kingdom
Rooms: James Watson and Rosalind Franklin Pavilions
The Scientific Coordinators are Midori Harris and Paul Matthews.
The first day covers an introduction to Ontologies, why are they being
made, what questions are they trying to address, how are they
made/represented. We will hear talks by Midori Harris, Dr. Robert Stevens
from Manchester University and the GOA group here at EBI, with a structured
hands on session in the afternoon using the IT training room facilities.
The second day is focused towards industry/commercial use of ontologies
with confirmed invited talks from Affymetrix (including a demo of their
analysis portal netaffx & the application/use of ontologies (GO) within
this), PharmaDM (with accompanying demonstration), and BioWisdom. We will
hear about how ontologies are used, what questions they answer & their
contribution to the analysis/research/software that they are used in/with.
Yet to be confirmed is a talk by AstraZeneca, who have been involved with
ontologies work, and assisting in their development from the outset of the
GO consortium.
The third day of the workshop has talks from Duncan Davidson of the Mouse
Atlas group in Edinburgh, Rachel Drysdale from the Flybase group based in
Cambridge and a number of talks from the EBI covering areas including: Mged
ontology, GO/UMLS, sequence ontology. These will show the extent to which
the ontologies are now a key part of the work, research and analysis within
the academic community.
At the end of the workshop we will have heard about the use of and
intentions of ontologies, their limitations, how they help & can be
utilized within the R&D environment to add value to research & analyses.

Dr Robert Stevens, University of Manchester
