This is an announcement to let you know that the greater fungal community
has begun to construct a microbial structure ontology. The ontology
contains terms that can be used to describe structures made by fungi and
other microbes.

This project is formally called the Microbial Structure Ontology

The website for this project is:

The website contains information on ontologies and their structure,
guidelines for suggesting terms for the ontology, and information on
subscribing and unsubscribing to the e-mail list. You will also find the
Microbial Structure Ontology (MSO) itself (follow the "View Ontology and
Definitions" link). You will find that the current ontology is very basic.
The growth of the project relies on the contributions of specialists to
make the ontology robust, complete and useful to all researchers.

There is an email list for public discussion between MSO developers;
fungal-ontology at If you are interested in participating
in this project, or if you would like to suggest terms to be added to the
ontology, please send a message to the fungal-ontology email list. (You
must subscribe first; directions are below).

Three curators at the Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD) are
currently the main contacts for this project: Chandra Theesfeld, Eurie
Hong, and Maria Costanzo. Initially, we three will mediate the
discussion on the fungal-ontology list and edit the MSO ontology and
definition files. If you or someone you know would like to be involved
in these tasks, we will arrange to include them in the future.
