Notice: GO updates use of 'Unknown'

Please be advised that as of October 14, 2006 there will no longer be
annotations of gene products to any "unknown": i.e. "biological
process unknown" (GO:0000004), "molecular function unknown"
(GO:0005554), and "cellular component unknown" (GO:0008372). All
existing annotations to these terms will be moved directly to the their
respective ROOT ontology term: "biological_process" (GO:0008150),
"molecular function" (GO:0003674), and "cellular_component" (GO:0005575).

This change provides a more accurate ontological representation of the
current knowledge about the gene products. Searching using AmiGO on the
IDs or term names for the unknowns will return the annotations to the
respective roots.

These terms ["biological process unknown", "molecular function unknown",
or "cellular component unknown" ] are currently children of each
respective aspect of the GO ontology (Process, Function, and
Component). These three terms were used in the past to indicate that
our curators looked for but could not find literature demonstrating
experimental evidence for annotation to any GO term.

Gene products, for which curators cannot find any experimental evidence
in the literature, will simply be annotated to biological_process,
molecular_function, and cellular_component, because they presumably are
actually involved in some process, and provide a function, and exist as
a cellular component.
