[liberationtech] Facebook in Iran

Interesting and scary story about how iranian surveillance of foreigners in
Iran is conducted:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106535773

"[...] On passing through the immigration control at the airport in Tehran,
she was asked by the officers if she has a Facebook account. When she said
"no", the officers pulled up a laptop and searched for her name on Facebook.
They found her account and noted down the names of her Facebook friends."

A good reminder that when traveling in authoritarian countries, one should
do a complete OS reinstall, encrypt EVERYTHING and keep all personal
information off of the laptop. I'd also recommend doing a wipe of one's
PDA/smartphone. You just never know...

Researchers especially should be concerned if collecting data from
activists, etc.
