I guess it might be interesting for some members of the list, specially
the one from Eastern Europe or with connections there.

Hurilab SICamp 2013

EVENT: between 28th and 30th June 2013 HuriLab will bring together
citizens, geeks, troublemakers, designers, organizers and connectors to
further the cause of human rights through the use of technology.

HuriLab will produce six ventures, conceived, designed and prototyped by
you! To apply to participate in HuriLab, you need to submit an idea
[1]. You can find a few examples of the kinds of tools we’d like to
help create more of here [2]. The best three ventures – chosen by our
panel of judges at the end of the event – will receive a grant from UNDP.

Who are we looking for?

Anyone living in Armenia, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iraq,
Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Montenegro or Ukraine.

You don’t have to know how to code software to participate in HuriLab –
we will introduce you to the people who can. And you don’t have to
enter an idea which is anything related to your day job.

All you have to have is a problem or challenge that you want to address…
take a look at the “refine your idea” page [3].

If your idea is chosen by our panel of judges, we’ll bring you to the
event for free!

Our panel of judges are drawn from the human rights and tech sectors.
They’ll evaluate your ideas based on three criteria: your understanding
of the social problem, the appropriateness of the suggested
technology/tool, the likely sustainability of the project/venture.

What is a Social Innovation Camp?

HuriLab is a Social Innovation Camp [4]. These events bring together
software developers and designers with people who understand a social
problem to help build web and mobile solutions to social challenges.

Social Innovation Camp is a movement [5]. We think the web and related
technologies hold huge potential to create change in many different
ways: how people hold those in positions of power accountable; who they
rely on to provide the services they need to live healthy, happy lives;
or how they make a difference to something that affects them.

But for any of this to happen, we have to understand what people really
need and start building the technology that can help – which is what
Social Innovation Camp is all about.

Who’s behind HuriLab?

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has got together with
Social Innovation Camp Ltd. (the organisation behind the movement) to
bring you HuriLab.

UNDP partners with people at all levels of society to help build nations
that can withstand crisis, and drive and sustain the kind of growth that
improves the quality of life for everyone. On the ground in 177
countries and territories, we offer global perspective and local insight
to help empower lives and build resilient nations.
