[liberationtech] Whatsapp + textsecure?

+1 to the question

As a related issue, at a recent event I raised whether Whatsapp or
textsecure could be a suitable replacement for SMS in interaction with
clients in mobile health programs. It seems like it could be a more
privacy-protecting technology to transmit sensitive health records than
SMS, if open whisper encryption really is implemented. However, those in
the field said that without a public API, whatsapp is not currently a
suitable SMS alternative.

Does anyone have more info on why/whether this assertion is true? Does
textsecure have this problem solved?
