Hi, all –

I met with some of the folks at Data & Society while I was in NYC last month. They’re doing pretty cool stuff. Their call for 2016-2017 fellows is now open – I encourage you to check it out and pass this along to any interested folks you might know.

updates and ideas from the D&S community and beyond

Around the Institute

We are now accepting applications for the 2016-17 class of Data & Society fellows!<>
We are looking for a diverse group of people who can see both the opportunities and challenges presented by access to data and who have a vision for a project that can inform the public or shape the future of society. The application deadline is December 1, 2015.

Call for Data Access Grant applications<>
The Survey Research into the Privacy and Security Experiences of Low-SES Populations project includes a “Data Access Grant” that will provide early access to the survey dataset to a graduate student. The application deadline is December 1, 2015.

What World Are We Building?<>
"This was not what my peers set out to create when we imagined building tools that allowed you to map who you knew or enabled you to display interests and tastes. We didn’t architect for prejudice, but we didn’t design systems to combat it either." —danah boyd

Around the Around

Targeted Surveillance, Civil Rights, and the Fight for Democracy<>
“Today mass incarceration and mass surveillance walk hand in hand. Mass deportation and mass surveillance walk hand in hand. Economic inequality and mass surveillance walk hand in hand. Yet, the movements built to solve these problems do not. They remain fractured.” —Malkia Cyril

Cops are asking and 23andMe for their customers’ DNA<>
"Both and 23andMe stipulate in their privacy policies that they will turn information over to law enforcement if served with a court order. 23andMe says it’s received a couple of requests from both state law enforcement and the FBI, but that it has ‘successfully resisted them.’" —Kashmir Hill
