[multilingual-dh] New British Library Chevening Fellowship working with Chinese OCR/HTR

Thanks for sending this, Adi! And yes, multilingual DH related jobs, workshops, anything are very welcome!

Just double-checking: based on what I saw in the post, it looked like applicants from Mainland China are eligible, and applicants have to be based in their home countries when applying, but it didn’t look like Mainland China was the only country that applicants could apply from. Is that the case behind-the-scenes, though?

Dear all,

Thank you Quinn for setting up the multilingual DH mailing list! I hope it’s ok to use it for some shameless fellowship promotion? I work at the British Library as Digital Curator for Asian and African Collections, and I’d like to make people aware of a new opportunity to join the Library’s Digital Scholarship team for a year as a Chevening Fellow, working with digitised Chinese historical texts.

The call for applications for a Chevening Fellow in 2020/2021, entitled “Automating the recognition of historical Chinese handwritten texts,” is now open:<>. The successful candidate will explore options for creating machine-readable texts at scale, focusing on material from Dunhuang, as part of the Stein collection. This builds on the work that we’ve been doing here at the Library towards automating transcription of printed Bangla and handwritten Arabic, see recent blog post:<>.

The call is now open until 5 Nov 2019. Please note that only applicants from Mainland China will be eligible, and they must be resident in their home country at the time of making their application. Please feel free to get in touch with any questions!

All the best,
