ABSTRACT:
HL7 (Health Level 7) is a highly influential collection of standards for healthcare-specific data exchange between computer applications, and HL7’s Clinical Document Architecture forms part of the government’s criteria for Meaningful Use of electronic health record technology. We provide a brief outline of the current version of HL7 and its ‘Reference Information Model’, focusing specifically on ontologically-related features and pointing to a number of areas of concern.

SPEAKER BIO:
Barry Smith is a prominent contributor to both theoretical and applied research in the field of biomedical ontology and the editor of the HL7 Watch blog.
