 Andrea,
Thanks for posting this. Here is a link to Ilya's video of the
demonstration―students laying a symbolic fire hose at the foot of the statue
to Mikhail Lomonosov, founder of the Russian Academy of Sciences *

Also great analysis from one of Ilya's colleagues of what is going in *

As part of our global ethnographic work at IFTF, we have been privileged to

Our recent project on BRIC countries included research from Brazil, India,

together. One of the students we worked with sent us this news about the
closure of the European University and asked us to spread the word.

  Hi, everyone,

Many of you remember Ilya Utekhin, an ethnographer from European University
in St. Petersburg, who did amazing ethnographies of Russian communal
apartments. Ilya, his students, and the University are our partners on BRIC
work and have been an incredible resource for us in Russia. I got this
e-mail from one of his students The Russian authorities have shut down the
University under the pretense of fire code violations (this in itself is a
big joke since 90% of buildings in Russia probably are in a lot worse shape
than this university building). The real reason is that the University has
been teaching students how to conduct election monitoring. If you have been
following what's going on in Russia you know that Putin's government has
basically quashed any opposition; in fact, the so-called elections process
is eerily reminiscent of the old Soviet Union. Recent NYT and Frontline
reports on the conduct of elections are pretty scary *

I got on Ilya's livejournal page and apparently they are planning a student
flash mob demonstration tomorrow in the center of St. Petersburg. He also
posted instructions on what to do in case you get arrested and how to
conduct civil disobedience protests. I would like to show as much support
as we can to Ilya and the University. You can follow the latest news in
English here http://euspb.blogspot.com/

Please distribute this widely, post this on our blogs, etc. I am worried
not only about the university but also about safety of of many of our
friends there. Thanks. Marina
