------------------------------Weekly Meeting - Earning to GiveMay 13
(Sunday) at 4:30pm in Old Union 122 This week, we’ll be talking about
“Earning to Give” - the strategy of trying to make as much money as you
can, as long as you’re not doing significant harm, and then donating a
large fraction of this money. Several EAs have have taken this approach -
including former SEA member Caroline Ellison, who works at Jane Street
Capital - and believe that it’s how they can do the most good, at least in
part (some of them plan to develop skills, then transition into more direct
work). One such person is Matt Wage. As a philosophy major at Princeton,
his senior thesis won a prize as the year’s best in the philosophy
department, and he was accepted for postgraduate study at Oxford
University. Instead, he took a job at an arbitrage trading firm in Hong
Kong to maximize the donations he could make to charities like the Against
Malaria Foundation ( See Nicholas Kristof’s full article about Matt Wage
<https://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/05/opinion/sunday/nicholas-kristof-the-trader-who-donates-half-his-pay.html>
) As one might expect, this strategy has been controversial. (And note
that the EA community has moved somewhat away from earning to give

 In any case, I think there’s a lot to be said on all sides of this debate,
so it should be a really interesting
discussion!------------------------------Talk by Consciousness
