Problem with make DESTDIR=mydir install when building webauth

i'm trying to make a package for webauth 3.4.2 for my distribution (Archlinux)
and i must use "make DESTDIR=mydir install" to do this because the program that creates the
package uses "fakeroot". But when compiling, "mydir" seems not to be used and it tries to write
to /usr/lib/apache and it can't, which is normal because i'm compiling as a user:

/home/httpd/build/ SH_LIBTOOL='/home/httpd/build/libtool'
/home/httpd/build/libtool --mode=install cp /usr/lib/apache/
cp .libs/ /usr/lib/apache/
cp: cannot create regular file `/usr/lib/apache/': Permission denied
apxs:Error: Command failed with rc=65536
make[3]: *** [install] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/comete/PKGBUILDS/webauth/src/webauth-3.4.2/src/modules/webauthldap'
make[2]: *** [install] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/comete/PKGBUILDS/webauth/src/webauth-3.4.2/src/modules'
make[1]: *** [install] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/comete/PKGBUILDS/webauth/src/webauth-3.4.2/src'
make: *** [install] Error 1

Do you have any solution to make it use the DESTDIR= option ?

Thanks a lot.
